about

For the 2017-18 school year, internationally renowned musician and composer Kelly Pratt (Beirut, Father John Misty, Arcade Fire, David Byrne & St. Vincent) wrote an original album-length song cycle for the acclaimed Camas High School Choir, known for their innovative collaborations with composers and bands from outside the choral world. This work brought the choir and student horn players, under the baton of Choir Director Ethan Chessin, into collaboration with Pratt's indie rock ensemble, Bright Moments.

The album, recorded live in concert at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, explores the concept of progress and pushes the boundaries of choral music by infusing it with elements of afrobeat, doowop, rock, out jazz, and even metal, while never losing a sense of aesthetic cohesion.

As one member of the choir put it, "It's the youth of the world teaching you a lesson that will stick with you forever."

Composer's Statement:
At its core, this work wrestles with the very notion of “progress” as it relates to humanity. While there have been countless social and technological advances that have led to undeniable improvements in our quality and length of life (at least for some), we remain stubbornly shortsighted in certain areas. We have more resources and capabilities at our fingertips than at any other time in history, yet the threat of sweeping global catastrophe (as a result of climate change, nuclear war, economic collapse, etc.) has never been greater. But it is my belief that, compelled by an insistent sense of vision and enterprise, we can make change. Groups of people, both large and small, can tackle problems. It is a unique challenge and pleasure to have the task of writing an album-length piece of music for an incredibly gifted group of 200+ singers. As a result of the sheer number of people involved, I felt I had no other option than to be quite ambitious both thematically and stylistically. You will note large variations in genre from song to song, something that I have been interested in for much of my professional career.
